WEMBLEY COUNTDOWN: Pre-match entertainment to Warrington Wolves v Huddersfield Giants Challenge Cup Final
11:53am Thursday 20th August 2009
LEADING classical soprano Hayley Westenra will headline the pre-match entertainment at this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup Final on Saturday 29 August at Wembley Stadium.
Westenra, who boasts the fastest selling debut album from a classical artist, will lead the crowd with her rendition of the traditional cup final anthem ‘Abide With Me’ before performing the national anthem ‘God Save the Queen’.
Providing support to the New Zealand-born singer, who has performed for The Queen and former American President George Bush, will be brass sensations The Black Dyke Band and The ACM Gospel Choir who will perform two sets before the game begins.
The Black Dyke Band are the most successful contesting band on the planet having won the European Championships 11 times, the British Open no fewer than 29 times and the National Championships of Great Britain 21 times.
Viewers of last year’s BBC series Last Choir Standing will also recognise The ACM Gospel Choir which were formed three years ago by vocal coach Mark De-Lisser.
Before the music gets under way however, two West Yorkshire schools - Outwood Grange College, Wakefield and Castleford High School - will contest the traditional cup final curtain raiser – the Year 7 Carnegie Champion Schools Final Ahead of kick-off, Wembley will re-unite players from the 1975 Challenge Cup Final between Warrington and Widnes including legends such as Mike Nicholas, Jim Mills and Doug Laughton. RFL Marketing Manager Phil Williams said: “We feel that the pre-match entertainment will create a sense of occasion that merits a place at the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final.
“The performances from Hayley Westenra, The Black Dyke Band and The ACM Gospel Choir will be the perfect build-up to the eagerly awaited final between Huddersfield Giants and Warrington Wolves.”
“This year’s hotly contested final is one not to be missed and we urge supporters to take to their seats early to avoid the disappointment of missing any of the pre-match build up.”
Turnstiles for the final will open at 12.30pm, with the Carnegie Champion Schools final kicking off at 12.35pm.
Tickets for the 2009 Carnegie Challenge Cup Final between Huddersfield Giants and Warrington Wolves at Wembley Stadium on Saturday August 29 are still available from the RFL Ticket Office. |
